Mining companies give back to remote communities
Two mining companies in Western Australia gave generously to people living in remote areas this Christmas.
Rio Tinto Iron Ore donated almost $10,000 to Frontier Services in a gesture that involved the staff of the mining company.
“Each year Rio Tinto Iron Ore gives a Christmas hamper to their employees across WA,” said Community Investment Advisor Kate Van Saane.
“They also offer their employees the opportunity to donate the value of their Christmas hamper to charity and this year Frontier Services was chosen as one of the four nominated charities.”
“Frontier Services proved very popular with over 150 employees opting to donate to them.” The amount raised totalled $9960.
Frontier Services Regional Manager WA Patricia Thomson-Harry said it was an extremely generous gesture from the staff working with Rio Tinto.
“It is a wonderful show of support, particularly coming from the Rio Tinto staff, many of whom are a valuable part of the communities in which we work.”
The money will be used to support the work of Frontier Services in providing a wide range of services and support to people living in remote Australia.
Meanwhile, mining company FAST, the Fluor SKM Iron Team, in Port Hedland, presented an extra special gift to a handful of carers in the Pilbara.
FAST donated eight gift vouchers worth $100 each to carers in the community who have received support from Frontier Services.
FAST organised the vouchers to acknowledge the hard work of carers in the community. They were presented to the families just before Christmas.
Six carers received $100 worth of pampering at a beauty clinic in South Hedland while another two received $100 to spend at Home Timber Hardware in Hedland.
Respite Coordinator Teki Prescott from the Pilbara Mental Health Mobile Respite Service said it was a privilege to inform the families about the gift.
“They all were so very happy and excited that someone cared about them,” Ms Prescott said.
“The recipients included three teenage girls who assist their mothers in the caring role. They were so excited to have been acknowledged.”
“The joy and elation that we shared is something we’ll always have in our hearts.”
Frontier Services delivers a range of respite services in the Pilbara including two mobile teams that travel across the region to deliver flexible respite options to remote and rural communities.
