Outback Links volunteers transform accessibility in Hawker, SA
In the heart of South Australia’s Flinders Ranges lies the small but mighty community of Hawker, home to just 340 residents. Known for its warmth and welcoming spirit, Hawker has long been a vital meeting point for locals and travellers. However, for some members of the community—particularly those with limited mobility—accessing local services had become a significant challenge.
Due to the town’s isolation and ageing infrastructure, many residents found it difficult to enter key locations, including the local church. That’s where the incredible support of 21 Outback Links volunteers came into play. Thanks to your generosity, the volunteers travelled hundreds of kilometres to Hawker for five days of dedicated service.
Led by Bush Chaplain Sunny Kadaparambil and National Director Rob Floyd, the team worked tirelessly to improve accessibility for vulnerable residents. They oiled and cleaned access ramps, repaved walkways, tidied up gardens for elderly homeowners, and repaired facilities. Every task was completed with high spirits and a shared mission to make life in Hawker a little easier for everyone.
“This effort showcases the heart of Outback Links,” said Rob Floyd. “Our volunteers stepped in to ensure that Hawker’s residents have safe and functional spaces, while sharing laughter, hope, and friendship with the locals.”
The trip also marked a special milestone for Sunny, celebrating his 10th anniversary as a Bush Chaplain. For a decade, Sunny has provided compassionate care across outback Australia, and this effort in Hawker was a fitting testament to his work.
