Flood-affected families receive a practical helping hand
Flooded families who were faced with clearing mud from their homes and salvaging possessions have been buoyed by the generosity and practical help offered by a partnership between charities and an online donation site.
Givit is a web-based organisation which matches donated goods with the people who need them using charity partners to identify the needs and ensure the donations are received.
The Frontier Services program, Outback Links, a partner with Givit, has helped a number of families to receive exactly the donations they need as they recover from the flooding which has swept across rural and remote areas in recent months.
“Families have received the basic things they need to get on with their lives, such as a washing machine, a chest freezer or other appliances,” said Outback Links Coordinator Davida Melksham. “Some families needed school desks so their children could continue their school work.”
“It has been wonderful to see that the network of Outback Links and Frontier Services across remote Australia can be used in this way to identify a need and ensure that it is filled.”
“Givit is a fantastic way to connect people who are in need with those who are able to donate something. It also ensures that the donations are exactly what is needed.”
Outback Links has provided volunteer support for families and communities affected by flooding across Queensland and NSW.
Volunteers provide hands-on assistance for individuals and families who need a helping hand for a short period of time.
“The volunteers have been able to step in and offer practical help for families who are getting on with life after the floods, helping with tasks such as fencing, gardening and assisting in the school room.”
“It makes a big difference for the families to have some extra support around so they can get back on their feet and into a normal routine again.”
Frontier Services and Outback Links will continue to assist families in the recovery process, which in some cases can take years as resources and funds are made available for repairs.
