Rev Bruce Gallacher painted a vivid picture of rugged ranges, red soil and native flora when he spoke about his work as the Kimberley Patrol Minister at the centenary celebrations held in Portland, Victoria.

Portland Uniting Church hosted the celebration to mark 100 years of ministry in remote Australia by Frontier Services and its predecessors.

Bruce shared stories of his ministry in the Kimberley during the Sunday service. Rev Denise Naish said many were touched by the impromptu nature of his ministry, “everything from funerals, baptisms and weddings to providing ministry alongside those who have shared tough and painful times as well as celebrations in their lives”.

Bruce, who was ordained in Portland, received a warm welcome. He parked his Patrol vehicle at the local Saturday morning market, using the opportunity to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

Outback Links volunteer Linton Smith motivated the congregation and wider community to get involved in the celebration. A highlight was the Frontier Services luncheon most ably cooked by the men of the congregation.

Visitors from across the region joined in the celebrations including Dulcie Andrew, a former AIM sister from Halls Creek and her husband Bob.

“It was a fantastic celebration that continues to touch the hearts of members of our congregation who have a long history of supporting Frontier Services and volunteering through Outback Links,” Ms Naish said.

“Congratulations Frontier Services on 100 years of creative and on the edge ministry. Our prayers for sustenance, renewal and guidance are with you all.”

The congregation will continue to support Frontier Services and Bruce’s ministry.
