Addressing Child Social Exclusion in Regional Australia

Addressing Child Social Exclusion in Regional Australia

When we make a difference in the life of a child, that impact can ripple through their entire future. But when children are denied opportunities, it can have the opposite effect, narrowing their choices and limiting their potential. A recent report by UnitingCare Australia and the University of Canberra has brought to light a concerning issue affecting the future of our children—especially those growing up in regional and remote communities.

The Child Social Exclusion Index report reveals that nearly half of the children living in these areas face a high or very high risk of social exclusion. This means that a significant portion of young Australians are being deprived of the opportunities most of us take for granted. The Index is a comprehensive measure that goes beyond income, considering multiple factors that contribute to a child’s sense of belonging and their ability to thrive. These factors include:

  • Socio-economic situation: Do families have the financial stability to provide for their children’s basic and educational needs?
  • Housing: Is their living situation stable, safe, and conducive to healthy development?
  • Health: Do children have access to essential healthcare services?
  • Connectedness: Can families access transportation, or are they isolated due to the lack of resources like a car?
  • Community and environment: Are there safe, engaging spaces for children to play, learn, and connect with their peers?

When these needs aren’t met, the consequences are profound and long-lasting. Social exclusion limits children’s ability to participate fully in their communities, affecting their social, emotional, and educational development. Early experiences of exclusion can lead to challenges that persist into adulthood, creating a cycle that is difficult to break.

How Frontier Services is Making a Difference

At Frontier Services, we understand the unique challenges faced by families in regional and remote areas. Our Bush Chaplains and Outback Links volunteers work tirelessly on the ground to provide practical, pastoral, and emotional support to those who need it most.

Our programs are tailored to meet the diverse needs of each community, ensuring that no child is left behind. Whether it’s offering financial relief to help children participate in school excursions, organising community playgroups, or providing vital resources to families affected by natural disasters, we’re committed to creating a brighter future for all children, regardless of where they live.

Join us in making a difference. Your support can help us continue to break down barriers and create opportunities for children facing social exclusion.
